Measure before ordering
Using a soft tape over close-fitting clothing, measure your bust at the fullest point, natural waist, hips at the fullest point, and hollow-to-floor while wearing your planned heel height. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug.
Choose by the designer chart
Designer sizing can differ from everyday clothing. Use the chart for the exact designer and choose the size that accommodates your largest measurement. If between sizes, the more alteration-friendly choice is usually the larger size.
Consider silhouette and construction
- A-line and ball gown: forgiving through the hip with a defined waist.
- Mermaid, trumpet, and fitted column: require close attention to bust, waist, and hip measurements.
- Corset and structured bodices: offer support but may have limited stretch.
- Beading, sequins, and lace: may require a formalwear alteration specialist.
Plan alterations early
